Drummer, Percussionist, Producer
Born in Zürich, Switzerland, Georg Hofmann has led a professional career as a drummer and percussionist for more than 30 years, playing and/or recording with such artists as Pierre Favre, Charles Gayle, Ernst Reijseger, Trevor Watts, Cyro Baptista, Robert Dick, Yang Jing, Herrmann Bühler, at Schauspielhaus Zürich, and many more.
Since 1984 he has collaborated with American guitarist Mike Nord in different groups and multi-arts projects such as CarrNordHofmann and CarrNordHofmannMaddox, Crossing Borders (with video by American artist Ann Kresge) and, since 2006, Noru Ka Soru Ka with Japanese dancers Mao Arata and Makoto Matsushima, and produced 5 CDs.
Georg Hofmann leads the trios Shades of Time (with bansuri master and saxophonist Steve Gorn from New York and Mexican marimba virtuoso Raul Tudon) and The Extensions (with Swiss musicians Christoph Baumann on piano and Vinz Vonlanthen on guitar/electronics).
As a composer, he has composed and performed for theater, literary readings, fashion shows and multimedia (Stadttheater Konstanz, Ring Theater Zürich, Die Lange Nacht der Kurzen Geschichten Zürich, TMC Avantgarde among others).
Georg Hofmann has toured in Europe, Northamerica and Asia and taught masterclasses at Columbia University, New York, Escuela Nacional de Musica, UNAM in Mexico City and at Willamette University, Salem/Oregon.
Living in Mexico City from 2001-2003, Georg Hofmann was the art director of ArtLife Latinoamerica together with his wife Martha Reyes. A private cultural center in Mexico City founded by Swiss piano wunderkind Jean-Baptiste Müller, the two produced concerts with local and international artists. Hofmann also acted as a consultant for Martha Reyes in her organizing Mexico’s first international festival of improvised music “sin compas” in 2004.
In 2012 he cocurated “3. Montag – one step beyond”, platform for improvised dance and music at Tanzhaus, Zürich.
Georg Hofmann is a member of SMPV (Swiss Association of Music Pedagogues) and teaches drums and free improvisation at Konservatorium Winterthur, Switzerland.
He currently continues to tour, produce, and compose, and works from his studio Scorpiosound in Mexico.
