I get asked a LOT about the sound difference between our V4 gen2 FET and V13 gen2 Tube condenser microphones. “They use the same capsule, so do they sound that different?”
The short answer – yes! My siblings and I share the same parents, and you can tell we are from the same family, but we’re definitely four different people.
The long answer is more complicated – distortion characterists between FETs and Tubes! Capacitor dielectrics! Capsule polarization voltages!…but I think if I started talking about those there would be a lot of glazed eyes looking at computer screens.
But Patrick Breen did a great job breaking down the difference on his YouTube channel from the average musician/engineer’s perspective, and gave some studio-quality examples as well. Check out the video below!
