Our V44S gen2 FET Stereo Condenser Microphone recently got a workout from our friend Matt at Millsounds Studio in Mountain View, Arkansas.
Matt currently owns a Vanguard V13 Tube Condenser and two Vanguard V4 FET Condensers, so he is well acquainted with the Vanguard Audio Labs sound. His studio is top-notch, with some amazing room sounds and centered around THE BOX Console by API.
Matt told us that he didn’t want to do a “typical review” that’s an unboxing, hitting product bullet points, and a few vocal clips. Instead, he used the V44S to record an entire song, with the V44S as the only microphone throught. That’s drums, bass, acoustic & electric guitar, vocals, piano, and percussion on a single source.
Besides achieving glorious tone, he also demonstrates some nifty tricks for stereo microphones – including mid-side, XY, and using the two identical-sounding capsules to blend polar patterns to get the best tone possible right into your DAW. Matt even made the full session files available – the link is in his YouTube description!
You can check out more of Matt’s work at Millsounds via his Instagram, website, or YouTube channel. If you love the way he captures sounds, you can also book to record with Matt, which has a built-in apartment over his studio and supports full band tracking.
